Fencing Classes

Learn Fencing at the Harrisburg Area YMCA! The West Shore Fencing Club at the YMCA is a recreational and competitive club offering beginner instruction in foil fencing. Fencers develop agility, dexterity, speed, and strength while learning the intricacies of attacks, parries, and ripostes. Fencers acquire agility, tact, speed, and strength while learning the methods of attacks, parries, and ripostes. We offer many levels for beginner, intermediate, and advanced members. The program is available at various times throughout the year with lead instructor Daniel Checkeye.

Members may register for more than one class. Fees will be applied. We require pre-registration for all classes. For detailed class info, please select a section below. For more info, please contact the West Shore YMCA at (717) 737-9622.

Beginner Fencing

For newbies! If you’ve been interested in trying Fencing, this is the perfect class.

Spring 2024 Session

Schedule:
  • April 1–June 24, 2024
  • Mondays from 5:30-7:00 PM
Fees:
  • YMCA Members: $50
  • Community Guests: $75
Intermediate Fencing

Intermediate Epee Fencing is open to anyone with fencing experience. You will learn complex actions and work on tactical progression and analysis. It is expected that you bring your own gear, but some gear may be borrowed on a first come first serve basis. Equipment will be provided for the beginner/intermediate class. Participants must be at least 12 years old.

Open Bouting – All Three Weapons

Open Bouting is currently open to all fencers with intermediate/skilled experience. Must have your own gear. Electrical weapons, Lames, and body cords are available on a first come first serve basis for lending. All 3 weapons are used. Participants must be at least 12 years old.
