Martial Arts – Martial Arts

Isshinryu Karate

The Martial Arts practice, Isshinryu Karate, is dedicated to focus on many skills and areas of personal growth. These areas of growth include self-defense, self-confidence, personal discipline, respect for others, and physical conditioning.

This form of karate was designed to improve both the physical and mental development of its participants. Focusing on stability, this martial arts style is performed in quick motions and natural stances and techniques.

Judo

The Martial Arts Sport, Judo, provides active combat to help in mental and physical progress. This sport originates from Japan and people practice it around the world. Rather than kicking and punching techniques, Judo will train your child to use coordination, balance, clout, and strategy in this unarmed combat sport. Techniques include throws, falls, mat work, and judo matches.

The program will aid in the physical progress of your child as exercises will help strengthen core muscles. In addition, this program will impact student character growth as they will learn the art of respect for others and self-discipline.  Most importantly, Judo will aid youth in their understanding of self-defense techniques in a safe and secure environment.

Friendship YMCA: Judo/Jujitsu

Open to all youth (6 & older) and adults. After completion of basic judo, participants will be eligible for competition with the judo team which competes nationally. The Harrisburg Judo Kai Club is the #1 YMCA-affiliated club in the nation; all instructors are USIA-certified coaches. Signing up for the Teen/Adult classes allows entry to both Judo and Jujitsu classes.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi, sometimes called tai chi chuan, is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle exercise and stretching. To do tai chi, you perform a series of postures or movements in a slow, graceful manner. Each posture flows into the next without pausing, which helps aid students in gaining their focus both physically and mentally.

Tai Chi is also a great way to practice balance and coordination. Though the Martial Arts program can be beneficial for adults, it can be a great way for children to have fun and develop their minds and bodies, too! Tai Chi is available at select YMCA branches.
