Corporate Giving: EITC at the YMCA

What is EITC?
The EITC program has a proud history of furthering the education of Pennsylvania’s schoolchildren since the program’s inception 15 years ago. On May 7, 2001, by an overwhelming bi-partisan majority, Pennsylvania made history by becoming the first state to pass an education tax credit aimed at corporations.

The Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC), provides companies with a 75% tax credit for donations to a non-profit scholarship or educational improvement organization.  The tax credit increases to 90% if the company commits to making the same donations for two consecutive years.  A business paying taxes in Pennsylvania can receive up to $300,000 in tax credits annually.  More importantly, the EITC provides children and families with a choice in their education and a chance in life.

EITC and the YMCA
The Harrisburg Area YMCA participate in the EITC program, and provides the following programs with the generous gifts from Pennsylvania donors.

The Harrisburg Area YMCA Northern Dauphin County Branch was recently approved by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as Pre-Kindergarten Scholarship Organization. This means that local businesses can fulfill a portion of their Pennsylvania State Tax bill by making a donation to the YMCA’s Childcare Program. Pre-K Counts in Halifax is a unique, public-private collaboration between philanthropies, state government, and innovative school district-community partnerships providing what national research has shown elsewhere: early learning in quality preschool settings is the key to helping all children succeed – now and in the future.

Students are separated into grade clusters during meetings. Professional volunteers facilitate the grade cluster sessions throughout the program. The program is designed to provide students with the education on various careers through interaction with career professionals. Another component to the program is college readiness. Students in grades 10-12 are provided SAT prep classes during the program. There are currently 50 students enrolled in Teen Achievers, of the 50 students, 4 are seniors. All 4 seniors are expected to graduate and attend college. The program will award 2 of the seniors scholarships.
