Youth Mentoring Programs

The Harrisburg Area YMCA offers youth mentoring groups for children and teens. Our mentoring groups help them engage in positive relationships and develop new life skills. We provide knowledge, character growth, and guidance to help youth realize their life potential. Mentoring helps build self-confidence and self-esteem and allows them to create their own goals. Studies show that youth with mentors had better rapport, social conduct, and healthier friendships.

We provide programs that provide a safe climate for Harrisburg Area youth and teens to connect with one another. Partnered with Dauphin County, the Harrisburg Area YMCA has built programs that keep kids off the streets. They engage them in projects that will change their future!

Northern Dauphin County YMCA

The Northern Dauphin County YMCA Mentoring Program is for students in Grades K-12 in local school districts. Our program is available for “At Risk” students in Northern Dauphin County. At-risk students are referred for academic, social, and behavioral issues. Our Group Mentoring program is offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 3:00-5:00 PM (Summer) or 3:30-5:30 PM (School Year).

Schedule:
  • Mondays & Wednesdays from 3:00-5:00 PM (Summer)
  • Mondays & Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30 PM (School year)

One-on-one mentoring takes place on these evenings as well and can take place at school during school hours. During one-on-one mentoring, your child and his/her mentor will work on homework, participate in physical activity, and talk. Our program goals will focus on grades, self-esteem, and improved interpersonal relationships as well as any issues your child may be having. Our activities will also surround the YMCA Core Values of Honesty, Caring, Respect, and Responsibility. We will also address issues such as drugs, alcohol, teen pregnancy, and bullying.

All students entered into the Mentoring program receive a FREE membership to the YMCA. Regular attendance is required to remain in our program. Mentors are not permitted to provide transportation at any time. If this will a problem, please consider this before applying.

At-risk students are referred by the school district and are paired with same-gender volunteer mentors from our community.
